Member Weldon Mortine Received Award

Weldon Mortine and his twin brother Wayne were two of five individuals awarded the Tuscarawas County Historical Society's Annual Zeisberger Heckewelder Award for 2007. Weldon had spent a great amount of time determining and promoting the history of the county's Old Stone Fort. He also serves as a Ohio Historical Society volunteer in curation and archaeology.

The medal is the Tuscarawas County Historical Society's highest award and is given in recognition of individual dedication and support of Tuscarawas County. The medal is named after two illustrious historical figures of Tuscarawas County. Reverends John Hechewelder and David Zeisberger served as the Moravian hero-missionaries to Christian Indians at three Indian villages: Shoenbrun, Gnadenhutten, and Salem along the river Tuscarawas. Unfortunately the peaceful Indians were caught in the conflict between Great Britian and America for the Ohio territory and were wrongly accused of theft and massacured.

Specific examples illustrated were the Newark "Holy Stones" [see above photo of Victor Kachur holding a "Holy Stone" replica], the Bat Creek and Grave Creek Stones, Hebrew Inscription Rock at New Mexico's Hidden Mountain, Ohio's lost "Hanukkiah" earthwork, ancient Hebrew coins found in America, and Mexico's Calixtlahuaca pottery Roman style head.
